The brief

What the client needed

Major Projects Victoria needed the centre ready for the 2006 Commonwealth Games, with a venue that would keep serving athletes and the community long after the event.

What we did

Scope and delivery

  • A 52-metre, 3.5 million litre outdoor competition pool and a 10 x 6 metre hydrotherapy pool
  • Permanent grandstand seating for 3,000, expandable to 10,000 for major events
  • A clear-span roof with two modes: permanent cover, and a Games mode with two temporary PVC roofs over a further 8,000 seats
  • Retail, function and office space, a 300-car multi-level car park and refurbishment of the South Melbourne Technical School
The outcome

Why it matters

Built inside a live facility beside Albert Park Lake while the F1 Grand Prix ran, with no environmental breaches and zero lost time injuries.
